Toyota Yaris Hybrid Battery Location

The Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross hybrid battery is located under the rear passenger seats. If you are having an issue with overheating, this post should help with some simple maintenance tips.

Traction Battery Location

The Toyota Yaris hybrid battery is nestled underneath the rear passenger seats. Access is obtained by lifting the bench seat off. See below, for a diagram showing key system components:

  • A – Warning label for high voltage system
  • B – High voltage battery service plug (DO NOT open this, risk of electric shock)
  • C – Rear Inverter
  • D – Rear Electric Motor (Traction Motor, this is only available on AWD models)
  • E – High Voltage Hybrid Traction battery
  • F – Orange High Voltage Cables
  • G – Front Electric Motor (Traction Motor)
  • H – Air Conditioning Compressor
  • I – Power Control Unit

Traction Battery Air Cooling Vents

The Yaris hybrid battery relies on air cooling to prevent the traction battery overheating. There is an air vent under the left side of the rear seat. It is important that the air vents are kept clear. For example, don’t put seat covers over the intake found here:

There is an air filter which should be periodically cleaned, and replaced if it is very old and cleaning does not clear debris. Check out the next section on how to clean the filter.

Hybrid Battery Cooling, Filter Maintenance

If your car is displaying this message: “Maintenance Required for Traction Battery Cooling Parts See Owner’s Manual”, It is definitely time to clean the cooling filter!

If the battery system is overheating, you might see this symbol on the dashboard.

Start by vacuuming the intake to clear dust on the intake, failing that you can remove the filter for more thorough cleaning, see removal diagrams below:
